Pair of Fine Gilt Empire Candelabra, Early 19th Century
Pair of Fine Gilt Empire Candelabra, Early 19th Century
A superb pair of French Empire-style gilt bronze candelabra, richly ornamented and finely cast, dating to the early 19th century. Each candelabrum is designed with three scrolling candle arms arranged around a central fluted stem, surmounted by a flame-form finial.
The stems are supported by elegantly modeled classical figures: one depicting a winged male youth (likely Cupid or Eros) holding a bow, and the other a draped female figure in the manner of a classical muse or goddess. Both figures stand gracefully upon stepped pedestals.
The bases are of architectural form, decorated in high relief with neoclassical motifs including an antique oil lamp, laurel wreaths, crossed elements, and stylized ram heads, all symbolizing victory, enlightenment, and classical antiquity-hallmarks of the Empire period.
The original fire-gilding (ormolu) retains a warm, rich patina, highlighting the exceptional quality of the chasing and detail throughout.
Condition: Very good antique condition with minor wear consistent with age and use.
Origin: France
Period: Empire, circa 1800-1820
