For centuries designers have tried to create the illusion of furniture made from rope, either by twisting solid steel bars together, or carving the rope’s form into solid wood. The effect was realistic but the material no more expressive than the solid from which the pieces were made. Exploiting the flexibility of steel rope, the Cut and Shut Rope chair is first formed into a complex Celtic knot which is then “frozen” by infusing the fibres with an alloy. Made of this new material, the final form is polished to give a lustrous texture not unlike antique silver.
The process was developed with James Garner, Tom Dixon’s prototype maker, the chair designed under the guidance of Liliane Fawcett, Dixon’s gallerist. It is now available though Tanguy Rolin.
